By Jonathan Beale BBC NewsA US ambassador to the UK has criticised the Government for not selling a mortgage on her house to Britain.
Ms Burdett said she was in the process of selling the home at the time the UK’s mortgage was made.
She said it was a property that was owned by a US company and not a British company.
“It was just a property, it was not a UK property.
I think it was the first time that I’d ever seen a mortgage with a British connection,” she said.”
And I had to go back to the bank, and say, ‘I’m sorry, you can’t sell this house to us, we have a contract with you’.”
The US Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Johnnie Carson, has been an outspoken critic of the UK Government’s mortgage policies.
“This Government has been unable to secure an agreement with the United States for this property,” he said.
Ms Carson said that the Government’s decision to sell the property to a US-owned company was “a serious mistake”.
“I’m sure that this is an unfortunate situation for the family,” she added.
“The Government is not prepared to sell to a foreign entity for a property which is owned by an American company.
I’m sure this was a deliberate decision by the Government.”
Ms Bunkett said that she would continue to sell her home and she was looking for a new home.
“I feel very, very sad and angry about this, but I feel very sad that it’s happened to me, but it’s also an opportunity to learn something from it,” she told the BBC.
“So I hope that it’ll inspire other families to try and sell their homes and not just be stuck in this terrible limbo that they’re in.”
